AN understrength Shrule/Glencorrib side were no match for Ballinrobe in Sunday evening’s senior league encounter as the winners took a big step away from the Division 1A drop zone.
Ger Butler’s visiting team lined out with just six of the team that started the club championship quarter-final a week earlier; among those missing were the Mortimer brothers (Trevor and Conor), the Walsh brothers (Ronan and Kieran), David ‘Roundy’ Geraghty, Dermot Geraghty and Mark Ronaldson.
Ballinrobe, who fielded a strong side, led at half-time by 0-8 to 0-3 and did enough during the second half to stay out in front.
The winners dominated the first quarter and led by 0-7 to no score after 12 minutes as their inexperienced opponents struggled to get going.
Ray McGreal fired over three confident points (two from frees) to get the locals up and running before David Killeen, Mark Walkin (free), Ronan Macken and corner-back James O’Malley all tacked on scores to extend the advantage.
Their early burst tapered off alarmingly though during the second quarter as Shrule/Glencorrib reeled off three unanswered points from Eoin Ronaldson (2) and Kieran Conroy to get back into contention.
However, Ballinrobe got things back on track after 30 minutes when their accurate free-taker, Ray McGreal, shot his fourth point of the half to bring the scoring to a close.
That free ended 18 barren minutes for the homeside and, considering it took Shrule/Glencorrib 17 minutes to open their account, the interval scoreline told its own story.
Ballinrobe brought in Galway Utd captain Alan Murphy for the second half and he shot two points to extend their advantage.
A full 18 minutes had elapsed by the time Eoin Ronaldson added to Shrule/Glencorrib’s tally and scores from Michéal Keane, Murphy again, and Peter Staunton sealed a facile victory.
Ballinrobe are away to Castlebar in Round 7 of the Mayo GAA senior league next Sunday at 2pm.
