Mission: Slimpossible! – this week’s figures

Just published: this week’s weigh-in stats from Mission: Slimpossible! You can access them HERE But, panic not, there are no individual scores. But it makes for very interesting reading, let me assure you. Remember, the competition is not won by overall weight loss (see below for full explanation). Our team is pushing hard. Check out their weekly schedule HERE – and all are welcome to join with them. How it will work: For the participant clubs: Each participant is given an individual weight loss target they aim to reach over the eight weeks. If they reach 100 per cent of their target, they score 100 points for their club. If they reach 75 per cent of their target, they score 75 points for their club, and so on. The club with the most number of points wins. If somebody exceeds their target, their score will remain at 100 points, as the organisers do not wish to promote excessive weight loss. The winning club will receive €1,500 first prize. For the supporters: There will be an opportunity for members of the public to buy a ‘forecast ticket’ during the competition. When purchasing this ticket, costing €5, each supporter will be asked to predict the order in which the three clubs will finish. Those who successfully predict the ultimate 1-2-3 will be entered into a draw for top prize of €300. Key dates Initial weigh-in took place in Lakeside Sports & Leisure Centre, Ballinrobe: Tuesday, January 7th, 2014; Weekly weigh-ins, Lakeside Sports & Leisure Centre, Ballinrobe: Every Tuesday thereafter until final weigh-in (GAA 7pm, soccer 8pm, rugby 9pm); Group training sessions, Lakeside Sports & Leisure Centre, Ballinrobe: Friday, January 17th, and every Friday until Friday, March 4th (exact time to be confirmed); Saturday, February 1st: Ballinrobe RFC fun challenge, details to be finalised; Saturday, February 15th: Ballinrobe GAA fun challenge, details to be finalised; Saturday, March 1st: Ballinrobe Town AFC fun challenge, details to be finalised; Final weigh-in, Lakeside Sports & Leisure Centre, Ballinrobe: Tuesday, March 11th, 7pm; Winning announcement: Gala Charity Night, Friday, March 14th, venue to be finalised. A novel idea from Inisturk GAA club

This has just been circulated to GAA clubs in Co. Mayo – given that we have enjoyed a famous trip to Clare Island in 2012, it might be something worth considering… My name is Eugene O Toole. I am writing to you in my capacity as secretary of Inishturk Island GAA club. You may or may not be familiar with our small club situated off the west Mayo coast. We are not a registered club but are affiliated with Mayo GAA county board. In the last five years we have redeveloped our pitch and built new dressing rooms. However, due to the economic situation in the country, most of our players no longer reside on the island and our GAA grounds are not used as much as we would like. With this in mind we have decided to offer our facilities to other clubs throughout the country. We have put together an all-in package of ferry/accommodation/meals etc which would be aimed at all age groups and all clubs including hurling, camogie and ladies. I would be very grateful if you could forward this email on to your club officers and club managers. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me at any stage.

The late Nancy Coen, RIP

Ballinrobe GAA club join with Mayo GAA board (see their statement below) in exending sympathy to the Coen family, Lehinch, Hollymount, on the death of Nancy Coen. The Coen family are synonymous with Gaelic football in this region, and, indeed, just last September Nancy’s grand-son Stephen captained Mayo to the All-Ireland minor title. Stephen and another of Nancy’s grandsons Darren – a cousin of Stephen’s – are current members of the Mayo senior football panel. A generation up, members of the Coen family (sons of Nancy) played with the Hollymount club for many years, while one of them, Jimmy, was a well-known referee throughout the west of Ireland. Nancy’s son Liam is the current chairman of the Hollymount-Carramore club. Mayo GAA board statement: We wish to extend sympathy to the family, extended family, neighbours and friends of Mrs Nancy Coen of Lahinch, Hollymount, Co Mayo. Reposing at Roundfort Community Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6.00p.m. with removal at 8.00p.m. to Church of the Immaculate Conception, Roundfort. Competition heating up in Mission: Slimpossible!

As this week’s figures show HERE, Ballinrobe Town AFC are leading the three-way race in the Mission: Slimpossible! competition that has generated huge public interest in Ballinrobe. The 1-2-3 after four weigh-ins sees the soccer club out in front, followed by Ballinrobe RFC and Ballinrobe GAA club respectively. Hundreds of pounds have been lost but thousands of euros have been raised for the three clubs and also local charity Friends of Grace. Weigh-ins take place every Tuesday night in Lakeside Sports and Fitness Centre, and the final results will become known on the night of Friday, March 14th, at a special event in the Valkenburg, Balinrobe. Mission: Slimpossible! is sponsored and supported on an on-going basis by Motivation Weight Management. Their involvement has made the competition possible, and they have certainly played their part in inspiring people to tackle their excess weight.

Now indoors, our Mission: Slimpossible! fun challenge

UPDATE, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14: Details of the event announced, sort of – we are down to a few final decisions about which ones to put in, and which ones to leave out, so here’s the long-list, no harm to keep everyone guessing: Basketball Challenge -dribble up and shoot from free throw line Passing challenge – up the court & run back down From half way line – kick the ball into an empty goal, not as easy as it sounds. Some form of a race with ladders, a sit up, press up and maybe a jersey change See you all at 6.30pm Saturday. UPDATE, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13: Change of plan – this event is now going ahead at 6.30pm in Lakeside Sports & Fitness Centre. Weather factors! So, it’s change of venue and a change of time. See you then.   Be in Flanagan Park for 7pm start this Saturday night. It will go ahead under lights – details to be revealed on the night. But it will be a skills-based, intellectually-stimulating, sportsmanship-promoting, playing-field-levelling challenge – just like the Rugby Club’s last Sunday week. Put it in your diary. Afterwards, we go to Costello’s to review the event in full. Anyone available to video it? Visit Motivation Weight Management website HERE
