End of an era

By Billy Horan, Club PRO The weekly Monday night Lotto draw has been Ballinrobe GAA Club’s primary source of revenue for the past 23 years. Treasurers invariably acknowledged their indebtedness in annual reports and further club improvements could be contemplated. The current economic reality, however, has blunted the impact of the Lotto as a fund-raising medium and the 50:50 draw has become the more inviting financial source. Ballinrobe GAA Club bowed to the inevitable, holding its final Lotto draw in Inch’s Bar on Main Street on Monday night, January 4, and the new approach will be ushered in John O’Hare’s Bar, Cornmarket, tonight (Monday, January 11) at 10.30pm. Gary Keane, Killimor, The Neale, was the final jackpot winner. His selection of the numbers 6, 9, 12 and 16 gained him €19,000 in the draw held on Monday, August 17, 2015. The demise of the Lotto was fittingly noted by the holding of a special draw and the lucky entrants were: Des May, The Neale Road (€500); Jerome Varley, Cross (€500); Joe Mulroe, c/o Art’s Bar (€250); Tracey Finnegan, Castlebar (€250); Fionn O’Loughlin, Clonbur Road (€250); Fergal O’Loughlin, Killoshine (€250); Shane Kelly, Ballinrobe (€100); Hilary Flannery, Rahard (€100); Martin Browne, c/o Cummins’ Hardware (€100); Joan Shaughnessy, Kilmaine (€100); Denis Kelleher, The Neale Road (€100); John Tiernan, Convent Road (€100); Michael Keane, Carrowkeel (€100); Elaine Macken, Main Street (€100); Iarla Reilly, Castlebar Road (€100); and Pat Guckian, Abbey Street (€100). In-house winners: Ita Cawley, Monica Niland, John Niland, and Willie Connolly. Spot-prizes, sponsored by Inch’s Bar: Denis Kelleher and Kathleen Fahy.

Pre-match interviews, Over 25s v Under 25s, followed by LIVE VIDEO STREAMING

Pre-match audio interviews HERE Excitement mounting. Video will be live HERE   Update, Christmas Morning, hope Santa was good: The Wrap Party + Video will be in Biggins’ Corner Bar at 4pm – this is likely to be an all-ticket affair, with significant black market activity, so be vigilant. Update, December 24, shortly before The Big Man goes on The Big Run (and we don’t mean Donie or Davy breaking upfield): This game is now changed to 12noon. It’s a Garda request apparently – they want to avoid the traffic chaos of previous years. The game will be live streamed with Cos Cam, as outlined below. Watch it HERE.  The video will be shown at 4pm in a secret location (a secret that will be prised from Declan Corcoran on this Holy Night, by one means or another…) Reminder of the traffic difficulties three years ago: Update, December 15: And this is not a joke. Micheál Keane has confirmed a) he won’t play – which is a big disappointment, b) he will shoot the video – which is a big boost, c) he will live stream the game on the day, and d) he will even have Cos Cam on match referee Padraic Costello Snr (who has also confirmed his availability today). It’s getting serious now. The video of the game will also be shown afterwards in a local hostelry.   The (almost) annual St Stephen’s Day Game will take place this year at 2pm in Flanagan Park. The Under 25s will play the Over 25s. Birth certs will be requested. Further details later but you can pencil in this for the day after The Big Day. Our new Players’ Rep James Quinn is actively canvassing participants, in case you want to avoid taking his call when you see his number coming up. And if you’re over 25, you should be very wary if you see David Killeen sidling up to you some night over the early festive period. Referee will hopefully be Padraic Costello Snr, and he might double as match analyst for the video.

Under-age wins a highlight in 2015 – agm report

By Billy Horan, Club PRO Alan Flannery, chairman, speaking at the annual general meeting of Ballinrobe GAA club, held in TACU Family Resource Centre, said that 2015 was a reasonably successful year. Senior status was maintained in the championship, while Division 1B status was also safeguarded. The winning of a number of underage titles was very encouraging for the future. Donal McCormack, secretary, surveyed the year’s activities in his wide-ranging report and alluded to fixtures difficulties. John Culhane, treasurer, dealt with the club’s financial position and reports were also submitted by Peter Ford, senior and under 21 team manager; Martin O’Connor, coaching; Declan O’Loughlin, Robe Rockets; Emma Jennings, ladies officer; and Peter Stanton, Bord na nOg. Warm tributes were paid to Alan Flannery who retired after three years as chairman and five previous years as treasurer. The contribution of John Culhane, the retiring treasurer, was also acknowledged. Declan Corcoran, who has been actively involved in a wide range of areas within the club, was elected the new chairman, and former chairman John Gilrane took over the position of treasurer. Michael Coyne said that the most fitting way to honour the memory of the late Martin Flannery, who died during the year, was for everyone to work for the good of the club. Officers: Patron Fr Conal Eustace, PP; President Billy Horan; chairman Declan Corcoran; vice chairman Liam Horan; secretary Donal McCormack; assistant secretary Dave Conway; treasurer John Gilrane; assistant treasurer Gerry Donnelly; PRO Billy Horan; coaching officer Martin O’Connor; pitch officer Sean Murphy; Lotto officer Michael Coyne; county board delegate position to be filled; South board delegates Billy Horan and Johnny Buckley; Players’ representative James Quinn; health and safety officer Ronan Macken; oifigeach na Gaeilge Liam Ó hÓráin; equipment officer Gerry Murphy; ladies officer Aidrienne Gleeson; Robe Rockets head Declan O’Loughlin; club designated officer Declan Corcoran; ASAP officer Padraig Costello; child protection officer Tom Carney. Some changes to Sunday’s Robe Rockets end-of-season celebration party

UPDATES, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3: Some changes: Time is Sunday 4pm; venue is Ballinrobe Community School; Mayo minor ladies footballer Annie Duffy will also be a special guest along with Barry Moran; refreshments will be served for adults and children.      After a hectic first year, Robe Rockets will hold an end-of-season celebration party in the Valkenburg on Sunday, December 6, at 4.30pm – and Barry Moran, the Mayo and Castlebar Mitchels midfielder, will be the special guest. The formation of Robe Rockets was one of the recommendations flowing from Ballinrobe GAA club’s Coaching Plan (2015 to 2020) which was launched at the end of 2014. One year on, the Rockets are now an integral part of the club with huge numbers taking part in the twice-weekly coaching sessions at Flanagan Park. “It has been a hugely successful year for Robe Rockets. We’ve introduced new footballers to the club, visited other clubs, hosted matches, parties and other events, and, most of all, everybody involved has really enjoyed the excitement of it all,” said Rockets chairperson Declan O’Loughlin. A special guest – not Santa Claus, we understand – will attend the celebration on December 6. Each child will be presented with a certificate from their coach, along with a beanie hat bearing the Robe Rockets logo. “It is important to thank everybody who made the year such a success – players, parents, coaches and all others who helped out. Although we are now in our brief winter recess, the players are looking forward to getting back into action again next year,” added Declan. Martin O’Connor, the club’s coaching officer who is also a DJ, will provide the sounds at the celebration party. There is a dedicated Robe Rockets section on the Ballinrobe GAA club website, www.ballinrobegaaclub.com, and new members are always welcome. Registration for the 2016 season will take place in January.
