Mick Mulvey’s Australian GAA connections

As you know from this post HERE, the death took place recently of a former chairman of our club, Mick Mulvey. We have been in touch with St Kevin’s GAA club, Melbourne, which Mick helped to found. They have kindly sent on an electronic version of their club history, which you can read HERE. It reveals that Mick gave a £40 loan to purchase the club’s first set of jerseys. How appropriate then that the blue and gold of St Kevin’s was draped on his coffin. We are grateful to Jenny Donovan from St Kevin’s for sending on the history.

Coaching Plan workshop

From Gerry O’Malley, Coaching Officer: To plan for the future development of Ballinrobe GAA Club a coaching committee has been established and tasked with developing a coaching plan. The committee has met on a number of occasions and the next stage of the process is to conduct a workshop for all stakeholders so that every member of the club can have an input into the path the club will take into the future. The workshop will take place in top room in the Valkenburg Hotel at 8.00pm on Wednesday, December 4th. All attendees will be broken into groups to discuss a number of topics associated with coaching and player development and then each topic will be thrown open to all to discuss in more detail. Parents and club members, and any other interested party who has an interest in the sporting, social and physical development of the children of the parish, and the desire to see Ballinrobe GAA Club to the forefront of top class coaching and competing consistently in the final stages of senior championship football, are requested to attend. The more people who attend, the more opinions we get, thereby producing a more comprehensive coaching plan.

Darragh Walsh, RIP

UPDATE, FRIDAY, NOV. 29: As a mark of respect to the Walsh family, and the Neale GAA club, our game v Castlebar Mitchels this weekend has been switched to tomorrow night, Saturday, at 7o’c, in Flanagan Park. This is to avoid a clash with the funeral on Sunday.   UPDATE, THURSDAY, NOV 28: Funeral arrangements are Saturday 1st December 4.00p.m. until 8.00p.m. in Cummins’ Funeral Home, Ballinrobe. Burial Sunday 2nd December after 2.00 pm mass. Full details HERE   UPDATE, MONDAY, NOV. 25: From Mayo GAA board Everyone in Coiste Chontae Mhaigheo would like to extend their sympathies to the family, friends, neighbours and club mates of the late Darragh Walsh from the Neale G.A.A. Club. Darragh Walsh, Creevagh, The Neale, Co. Mayo. (aged 23) died in a road traffic accident in Qatar late last week. Darragh was a member of the Neale GAA team that won the Mayo County Junior Championship in 2012. He is the son of Gerry and Miriam Walsh. Gerry is Chairman of the Neale GAA Club and Miriam was actively involved in developing the Neale Ladies. Darragh was only two weeks in Qatar and had commenced training on the Tuesday night with the local GAA team.  Funeral Arrangements to follow later. Our thoughts this evening are with the Walsh family, the Neale, and the entire Neale GAA community following the tragic death of Darragh Walsh in a traffic accident in Qatar. The Walsh name has been synonymous with Gaelic football in the Neale for a number of generations, and Darragh continued that proud tradition. News of his death has cast a pall of gloom over this region, including here in Ballinrobe where Darragh had many close friends and former school mates. Coming so soon after the untimely death of another young footballer, Alan Feeley from Claremorris, this is another crushing blow for the GAA community in this part of the world. Ballinrobe GAA club extends sympathy to Gerry and Miriam Walsh and their family. Gerry is current chairman of the Neale GAA club and, in that role, our club officers have had many numerous dealings with him, not least in the build-up to the O’Mara Cup final between our two clubs earlier this year. He played his part in ensuring that the historic final between two great rivals was hosted by the Neale club in a thoroughly impressive manner that did the occasion justice. Miriam played football for the Neale in her younger days, and also coached many young people from our club in her capacity as a full-time coach. May Darragh Walsh rest in peace.
