A typical Robe Rockets Saturday morning

Saturday, July 4th, 2015 – so what does go on at our Robe Rockets Academy every Saturday morning?     Dave Conway, secretary of Robe Rockets, and one of its main coaches, gives this overview while he stands beside a portable goal – waiting for me to go away again so he can move the goal to where it should be.   [audio:http://ballinrobegaaclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/daire.mp3] There’s a flurry of activity as parents arrive with their children. One of the great features of Robe Rockets is parental involvement. Many parents wait and lend a hand and some have gone on to attend coaching courses and workshops. As the parents are the first educators of the children, and the biggest influence on their lives, the deep involvement of parents in their football can only be a good thing. But what do the players think? John Gleeson is a veteran – at seven years of age. Here he explains why he comes along every Wednesday and Saturday. [audio:http://ballinrobegaaclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/john-gleeson.mp3] The coaching is in full swing now. The atmosphere is supportive and positive. “Good, Rory, well done”, shouts Colm Jennings, the head buck cat at U6 level. Marie O’Haire celebrates every shot on target at the town goal. [audio:http://ballinrobegaaclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/fizzy.mp3] But where have all the girls gone? They’re not here in their usual numbers this morning. Declan O’Louglin gives the reason why they’re strangely absent. [audio:http://ballinrobegaaclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/declan.mp3]   And an hour later, it’s over. All to be repeated next Wednesday and next Saturday, over and over again, fun times for children and adults, memories being created, friendships being formed, skills being developed, a culture built hour by hour, a relationship with the club and the game that will hopefully go deeper and deeper in the weeks, months and years ahead. Go Rockets.  Out-take: not sure how I created this photo, but, fair is fair, it’s right cool…

Good luck to Kevin Quinn and Mayo minors

Our attacker Kevin Quinn has been named as a substitute on the Mayo minor team for today’s Connacht minor football championship clash with Galway in McHale Park, Castlebar, at 6.30pm. We wish Kevin all the best, and hopefully he will make an appearance at some stage during the encounter. He follows in the footsteps of his brother James, who played for Mayo minors in Croke Park a few years ago, including the day Mayo defeated the then All-Ireland champions Tipperary. Kevin is a nephew of current Mayo joint manager Noel Connelly, who captained Mayo in the 1996 and 1997 All-Ireland football finals. He also captained Mayo to win the 2001 National League title, just reward for a man who was one of the leaders of a fine Mayo team for the preceding five years.

Full recorded video coverage from Mayo SFC game v @aghamoregaa now available here

Update, Sunday, June 28: The full video of coverage is now available HERE   LINK for live streaming (starts 6.20pm Saturday, for 6.30pm throw-in):  http://ustre.am/1oM2v  The Broadcast Team The Man on the Video: Micheal Keane. Shoots as fast as he played. The brains behind this operation. Commentator: Liam Horan. Talks better than he played. Even better. Ballinrobe Analyst: Padraic Costello Snr. Needs no introduction. But will get one all the same. The veterans’ veteran, the straight talkers’ straight talker. Never needed an iPad to make his point, doesn’t now. Played in every position for Ballinrobe. Intermediate championship winner in 1979, junior winner in 1990, wore the green and red (and we don’t mean Ballina or Kilmaine) too. Aghamore Analyst: Adrian Hession, a man with strong local connections, indeed; might even be half a Ballinrobe man really. Best known as Mr Hurling Promotion in Mayo, plays in goal for Tooreen, and has donned the red and white of Aghamore too. We hope he won’t be over-awed by P Cos.   News from earlier in the week: Our intrepid former player Micheál Keane (recently retired from playing duties after a stellar career, and now serving as PRO of our Bord na nOg section) has been experimenting of late with his video camera – and we can now confirm that Saturday’s Mayo SFC round three clash with Aghamore will be streamed live on the net. Thanks to the county board for giving us permission to stream the game live, and we are also encouraging our friends in Aghamore to spread the word among their supporters as well. More anon. Full commentary will also be provided by Liam Horan. (First sub, a young lad called Mike Finnerty hoping to get a bit of experience). Match analyst Padraic Costello Snr (there was never a sub. who could fill his boots).
