Ladies football

Today is Debut Day for our U8 and U10 girls footballers

On Wednesday evening next, August 13th, we have two girls-only games at U8 and U10 levels, versus Shrule-Glencorrib, in Glencorrib at 7pm (note time is changed from 6pm). Meet in Glencorrib pitch at 6.45pm. If you have transport issues, contact Declan O’Loughlin on 087 206 3863. If you haven’t received a text about this match, and feel you should, can you email your name, the child’s name and date of birth, and your own mobile number to secretary.ballinrobe.mayo@gaa.ie This game is being played under the auspices of our club, rather than ladies football, as neither club is affiliated to the ladies football organisation. However, our aspiration is to become a fully-fledged ladies club next year. Please make a special effort to be there as it will be the first time we field girls-only teams for perhaps ten years. Special thanks to Mary Langan for organising the game. It’s a Debut Day for a lot of young players in our club so it’s important to make it memorable for them: we are making a big effort to get parents/guardians along. Bring your cameras. We will be contacting parents/guardians with final arrangements in next couple of days. Here’s how we have done Debut Days in the past. And video of our Saturday morning Academy here:

Ladies football training goes outdoor

This Saturday, Ballinrobe’s young ladies footballers will have their first outdoor training session of the year – it will be at Flanagan Park, Ballinrobe, at 9.30am. Girls up to the age of 12 are invited to take part. The girls will train separately from the boys, who are also training at 9.30am. Parents are reminded that children should wear warm clothing. Drop-off and pick-up is at the dressing room area in Flanagan Park, rather than outside the entrance gates. The girls have been training indoors at Lakeside Sports & Fitness Centre in recent weeks and are now venturing outdoors for the first time – this is all part of a drive to re-establish a ladies football team in the town. Please forward this notice onto anyone you feel might be interested in sending their children along.

Ladies football training on March 22nd @radiomidwest, @mayogaa, @ladiesfootball

The effort to form a ladies football team in Ballinrobe will continue apace on Saturday, March 22nd, when a training session will be held at Lakeside Sports & Fitness Centre, for girls under the age of 12. This follows a recent meeting at which the possibility of establishing a club was discussed. This indoor session will introduce girls to the skills of ladies football and it is hoped it will be the precursor to a club being formed in the near future. To take part, simply turn up at 9.30am on March 22. Parents are asked to assist on the day. More information at www.ballinrobegaaclub.com.

Mick Mulvey, RIP

Statement:         Ballinrobe GAA Club – the late Mr Michael (Mick) Mulvey Date:                     Saturday, November 9th, 2013      Ballinrobe GAA club regrets to announce the death earlier today of a former chairman of our club, Michael (Mick) Mulvey. A native of Cloone, Co. Leitrim, Mick emigrated to Australia in his youth, and, with his wife Diana and their older sons and daughters, re-located to Ballinrobe in the 1970s. A number of members of his family were born here in Ballinrobe. The popular couple ran a public house on Bridge Street – operated in more recent times by the Mooney family – and Mick was heavily involved in the promotion of Gaelic games in Ballinrobe. He was also deeply immersed in the business life of the town. Mick assumed a number of roles within Ballinrobe GAA club, including that of chairman. Apart from running the public house, Mick was also a professional painter and was a familiar face around Ballinrobe for almost 40 years. He will be fondly remembered in Melbourne, Australia, because, in 1956, he was a founder member of the St Kevin’s GAA club in the city. St Kevin’s is one of Melbourne’s oldest clubs, and continues to thrive, as their website illustrates. The year of 1956 was a good year for an Irish man to be in Melbourne as it coincided with Ronnie Delaney’s historic 1500m gold medal triumph in the Olympics, staged in the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Members of the Mulvey family played Gaelic football, hurling and ladies football with Ballinrobe, and, indeed, daughter Jenny was instrumental in establishing a ladies football team in Trinity College, Dublin, when she studied there in the early 2000s. Funeral ceremonies will take place on Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Details are available HERE. Ballinrobe GAA club will form a guard of honour to escort Mick from St Joseph’s Funeral Home to St Mary’s Church, on Monday evening. Members are asked to assemble, wearing club gear if possible, at 7.45pm at the funeral home. Sympathy is extended to his wife Diana, daughters Margaret, Anne and Jenny, sons Tom, Paul, Luke and Shane, and extended family. May he rest in peace.   –            Alan Flannery, Chairman, Ballinrobe GAA Club
