BORD NA NOG

Lift off: it’s time to launch the Robe Rockets!

PLEASE NOTE NEW TIME FOR THIS EVENT – 3.30 to 4.30PM.  Stand by, strap yourself in, Robe Rockets are about to be launched. The launch will take place on Saturday, January 24th, from 3.30 to 4.30pm, in the Lakeside Gym, Fitness & Sports Centre as part of the annual underage registration day for all young players. Two Mayo players – Ballinrobe’s Kenny O’Malley and Ballintubber’s Cillian O’Connor – will launch Robe Rockets, which is a new wing of the club focused exclusively on footballers up to the age of ten. “Robe Rockets will be a lot of things – a place where young children can be introduced to football, where they learn how to enjoy football with their existing and new friends, and all in an atmosphere for fun and all-round participation. We hope it will become a major part of the week for every young boy and girl interested in playing football in Ballinrobe,” said Declan O’Loughlin, the Head Buck Cat, aka chairperson, of the Robe Rockets committee. “Every child up to the age of ten is invited to take part in the Robe Rockets Academy, which will start a week after the launch. Exact details will be revealed at the launch.” Robe Rockets is one of the recommendations flowing from the club’s Coaching Plan (2015 to 2020) which was recently launched. A committee has been formed to oversee the Rockets and they are particularly keen to encourage parents to become involved. “In recent years, as we have expanded our under-age down to include under 6 footballers, the response from parents has been fantastic in terms of helping out wherever they can, and we know this will continue under the Rockets”, added Declan. All club members are invited along to the registration on January 24th. One of the attractions on the day will be individual or family photos with the Mayo players, and coaches will be on hand on the day to outline the plans for the year and to get to know the players. Families and players can come along at any time between 3.30pm and 4.30pm, and it is anticipated that registration will take approximately 20 minutes. Registration is for players up to the age of 18, boys and girls. Membership prices are HERE

Micheál Keane announced as PRO of Bord na nÓg

Long-serving club player Micheál Keane – who also played at all levels for Mayo – has been named as PRO of the club’s Bord na nÓg committee. Micheál joins Peter Staunton (chairman) and Keith McTigue (secretary) in a new-look committee and we wish them every success. The photo below is not Micheál Keane but we said it’d be a pity to give Micheál the web tutorial without showing him how to put in photos (not that he needs – or, indeed, will get – much tutoring!)

Peter and Keith are new Bord na nOg officers

The Bord na nOg agm on Saturday evening last was well attended by club members and Bord na nÓg coaches. All attendees were presented with a Bord na nÓg Annual Report, which provided information on the various under-age grades. Each coaching team set out their findings in the report for 2014, including issues such as attendance levels, games played, success levels and suggestions for improvement. Both John Sweeney, Chairman, and Tom Carney, Secretary, gave an individual report re: Bord na nóg, while both went through the Annual Report. John Sweeney gave a brief outline of the key actions and various components of the new Coaching Strategy. A number of issues were discussed with the people in attendance. Some bullet points of relevance: – Declan O`Loughlin was congratulated on his new appointment with the newly established Robe Rockets, – Declan O`Loughlin highlighted the success of the newly established under-age girls team, – A discussion took place regarding where in some cases children in other clubs were being told to stay at home for matches (as they would not make the first 15 and would not get a game). This was fundamentally criticised as it went against the core of Bord na nÓg, and Ballinrobe club advocates a fully inclusive approach, – Peter Staunton was appointed as Chairman of Bord na nÓg, Keith McTigue as Secretary, and Tom Carney as Assistant Secetary, – Michael Coyne praised all volunteers within the club and congratulated the club on the new coaching strategy.

The Lakeside Sports & Fitness Centre was the venue for our Bord na nOg end-of-season party on Saturday last. Pictures from a memorable afternoon are available HERE Guest of honour was our clubman Kenneth O’Malley, who plays with the Mayo senior football team. Kenneth proved a big hit with all our young players. Well done to all who organised the event and it won’t be long now before the wheels will start turning again for 2015. To parents and players: the pictures are high-resolution, so you can download and print if you wish.

Listen here to Fergal Costello’s speech from our coaching plan launch

I think it is fair to say that anyone who attended our club Coaching Plan launch last night found Fergal Costello’s speech to be quite powerful. Not alone did Fergal summarise what he feels are pre-requisites for a club to be successful, but he also laid down some further challenges for our club. The fact that he had dissected our plan in great detail over the past week lent extra weight and credibility to his words. Anyone who knows Fergal knows he is an analytical and shrewd individual – and a man who led his club and county splendidly – and he certainly honoured the work of our coaching committee by assessing their work seriously. His full speech is HERE Actually, strictly speaking it’s not the full speech, the first 30 seconds or so are missing. Sound quality isn’t hectic either in places, so apologies for that.  You don’t need a Dropbox account to open it – just hit download on the top right hand side and it will download to your hard disk, and you can play it from there. The full plan is available HERE More on the launch and the plan HERE Pictures from the launch anon.
