Ballinrobe schools celebrates ‘Nine in the 90s’

FAMOUS days in the sporting history of Ballinrobe Community School will be recalled at a special All-Ireland Football Reunion on Saturday, May 7th.
“Nine in the 90s” will be the theme of the reunion which will take place in the Valkenburg Hotel, Ballinrobe, and will celebrate the school’s stunning haul of nine All-Ireland football titles in the 1990s.
The run of success began in April 1991, just seven months after the school was officially, when the senior men’s team won the All-Ireland Senior B championship. This historic victory over St Paul’s, Waterford, in Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare, was followed later that month when the women’s team added the All-Ireland Senior A title.
Thus began a memorable run of success, which resulted in the school garnering the following titles in the first decade of its existence: All-Ireland Senior Men’s B title (twice), All-Ireland Senior Ladies A title (five times), and All-Ireland Junior Ladies A title (twice).
The organising committee comprises teacher/coach Gerry Fahey, medal-winners Donal Costello and Christina Heffernan, and Liam Horan, who reported on many of the successes in the local media.
“This reunion is open to everyone who would like to attend – players, teachers, families, and supporters. Those were special times for the south Mayo/north Galway region, and we would hope to mark them with a night to remember,” said Mr Fahey.
“There will be no cover charge. Finger food will be provided on the night, and there will be videos, newspaper cuttings, and other memorabilia.”
The event starts at 8.30pm in the Upstairs Bar in the Valkenburg.
