Over 50 members and supporters of Ballinrobe made the journey for the two games, which were followed by a most enjoyable night of entertainment on the island.
An unexpected bonus was the presence of Saw Doctor Leo Moran, who thrilled visitors and locals alike with a rendition of ‘Clare Island.’
“It was a very special weekend for everyone who travelled, and we are particularly grateful to Martina O’Malley, Brendan Burns and everyone associated with Clare Island GAA Club who made us feel so welcome,” said Ballinrobe GAA chairman Tom Carney.
Ballinrobe presented Clare Island with a framed Ballinrobe jersey, and Clare Island reciprocated with a souvenir wall plaque to mark the historic first game between the two clubs. The match video, filmed by John Culhane, was played shortly after the game in O’Grady’s Bar, and proved a major attraction for players and supporters alike.
The Ballinrobe team, managed by Kieran Biggins, found Clare Island too hot to handle in the main event of the day. It was a well-contested affair with Clare Island benefitting from early goals to triumph by 3-7 to 1-2.
Prior to departure for Clare Island, the Ballinrobe travelling party was sent on its way by the town’s Mayor Peter McHugh, who was unfortunately unable to travel.
