U10 Girls played St. Mary’s Aghamore

By Declan O’Loughlin Our two U10 ladies teams played St. Mary’s Aghamore this afternoon. Both games were tough encounters with great skills on show from both teams. This was the girls fifth game of the season and these young ladies have improved with each game they have played. U10s girls train Thursday at 6pm and Saturdays at 9:30am and new members are always welcome. Thanks to Aghamore for travelling and we hope to play them again away from home.

Honour for Ballinrobe GAA as our Club Radio commentator Tom gets local radio break

We’ve been broadcasting games and other events on our Club Radio for a number of years now – and this week we are delighted that a club member who cut his broadcasting teeth here is set to get his break with Mid West Radio. Tom Carney (left, above), a former club chairperson and player and current coach, has really blossomed since getting involved with Club Radio. He moved from analysis to full commentary – including last weekend’s Mayo SFC clash with Castlebar Mitchels – and is now about to make his commentary debut on Mid West Radio. Tom will cover the Connacht ladies football final between Mayo and Galway at Elverys MacHale Park on Sunday week, July 2, at 4.30pm. We wish him all the best and we are very gratified that Ballinrobe Club Radio has proven to be such a good breeding-ground for Tom. Three other club members – Mike Finnerty, Rob Murphy and Liam Horan – will be on the road tomorrow (Saturday) when LocalStreaming.club, owned by Liam, will broadcast the five Celtic Challenge finals on GAANow. They will be accompanied by another young club member with an interest in broadcasting, 9 year-old (and nearly 10) Matthew McCormack.

The late Michael John Murphy, RIP

Ballinrobe GAA club regrets to announce the death of a loyal and popular member of our club, Michael John Murphy, New Street, Ballinrobe, a former recipient of our Hall of Fame award. A native of Kilmaine, Michael John became actively involved in all aspects of the club’s operations when he moved to live in Ballinrobe. He was groundsman at Flanagan Park, Ballinrobe, for many years, and took great pride in ensuring that the club’s playing and off-field facilities were always of the highest standard. One of his major contributions to our club was his overseeing of the development of our new dressingrooms, and the Peter Browne Memorial Stand, in the mid 1980s. Additonally, Michael John was a strong supporter of the club’s fund-raising activities and was a reliable seller of a considerable number of tickets for our weekly draws. Local referees including Christy O’Haire (RIP), Martin Murphy, Sean Murphy and Padraic Costello were always able to count on Michael John when they needed an umpire for club and inter-county games. He would always bear a calm and unflustered demeanour regardless of the importance of the game or the closeness of the exchanges. Members of his family also lend their support to the club in a variety of ways. As a mark of respect to Michael John, tonight’s (Monday) 50:50 draw has been postponed until next Monday night, when it will be held in Luke Carney’s Bar. In a broader community context, Michael John was heavily involved in the building of An Sportlann (now Lakeside Sport & Fitness Club) in the early 1980s. The club will form a guard of honour to give a fitting send-off to a veteran club member who cared deeply about our fortunes. Funeral arrangements are as follows: Reposing at Cummin’s Funeral Home Ballinrobe on Tuesday evening from 5 o’clock with removal at 8 o’clock to St Mary’s Church, Ballinrobe. Funeral Mass on Wednesday at 1 o’clock with burial afterwards in the New Cemetery. House private. Michael John is predeceased by his wife Teresa and daughter Helen. He is survived by his  sons Joseph, Michael, John, Gerard; daughters Ann, Marian, Bernadette,  Angela, Therese; sons-in-law John Slone, Gabriel Heneghan, Michael Robinson, James Dooley, Tom Conlon, Miko Gibbons; daughters-in-law Carmel, Dolores, Maureen, Gillian; brother Patrick; sister Margaret; nephews; nieces; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; relatives; neighbours and a large circle of friends. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and his wide circle of friends. May he rest in peace.   Declan Corcoran, Chairman, Ballinrobe GAA Club

Start Collecting for Topaz “Cash for Clubs 2017”

Ballinrobe GAA is now registered for the Topaz Cash for Clubs 2017 and we are asking all Members of the Club, Parents, Players and Coaches to start collecting the Topaz “Cash for Clubs” tokens for us. We were very lucky to win €5000 last year and are looking to build on our success and raise much needed Cash for our Club. The programme offers clubs of all types and sizes from across the island of Ireland the chance to win up to €10,000. The first club drawn will win the top prize of €10,000, while 10 clubs thereafter will win €5,000, and a further 140 will collect €1,000. Check out our winners video from last year below. How it works: We are encouraging all Members of the Club, Parents, Players and Coaches to go that extra mile for our club by collecting ‘Cash for Clubs’ tokens or using a Play or Park game tag which are available in- store or through the Topaz Play or Park app. You’ll receive one token once you spend €30 or more on fuel purchases and once you have linked your game tag to the club; BALLINROBE GAA #2831- MAYO your tokens will be automatically allocated to us. Once a club has collected 2,000 tokens, they will be automatically entered into an ‘everyone-wins’ draw. Cards will be available next week at all training sessions.  See link below https://www.playorpark.ie/cash-for-clubs/how-to-play#
