The Rockets go skywards

Today is the first day of our new Robe Rockets section at Lakeside Sports Centre. Plenty of excitement, trepidation and the odd tear – and that’s only the parents. For many young people, this is their first time going to a club practice session. Hopefully it will be the first of many. Great turn-out of coaches and parents/guardians willing to help out. We will be indoors for the next few weeks before taking to Flanagan Park for the rest of the year. See pix and video HERE – sorry about the upside down ones. More being added throughout this morning. Listen HERE to club chairperson Alan Flannery welcoming young  players, coaches and parents/guardians to the Rockets.

Robe Rockets launch ‘design our logo’ competition

Ballinrobe GAA club has a new Robe Rockets section catering for young players – and now the hunt is on to design a new logo for the Rockets. The young club member who submits the winning entry will receive a €50 Vaughan’s Shoes voucher, sponsored by Ballinrobe GAA club. “Robe Rockets is about fun,  learning the skills of the game in an entertaining environment. We are very keen that the young players involved will have a direct input into how it’s run,” said Robe Rockets chairperson Declan O’Loughlin. “And that’s why we want the Robe Rockets logo to come from our own players.  Any U12 member of the club can enter the competition to design the logo, and we are now accepting entries.” The winning logo will appear on all Robe Rockets  publicity material and merchandise . Judging will be carried out by a local artist. Club members born in or since the year of 2003 can enter by bringing their creation to their weekly Robe Rockets football get-together, or email it to secretary.ballinrobe.mayo@gaa.ie. Details of get-togethers for each age-group have  been circulated by email and text message, and they are also available on the club website www.ballinrobegaaclub.com. Entrants should include their name, age, address and parent/guardian’s telephone number with their entries. Closing date is Sunday, February 22nd.

The high resolution versions of the pix are available HERE – well, strictly speaking, they are not all there yet as they are syncing, so maybe check later this evening. You can download and print your family pix from there. You don’t need a Dropbox account to access the pix. We had a huge turnout and real enthusiasm for the year ahead. Cillian O’Connor and Kenny O’Malley proved major hits and we are grateful to both men for coming along. It all kicks now next weekend – more details HERE

Lift off: it’s time to launch the Robe Rockets!

PLEASE NOTE NEW TIME FOR THIS EVENT – 3.30 to 4.30PM.  Stand by, strap yourself in, Robe Rockets are about to be launched. The launch will take place on Saturday, January 24th, from 3.30 to 4.30pm, in the Lakeside Gym, Fitness & Sports Centre as part of the annual underage registration day for all young players. Two Mayo players – Ballinrobe’s Kenny O’Malley and Ballintubber’s Cillian O’Connor – will launch Robe Rockets, which is a new wing of the club focused exclusively on footballers up to the age of ten. “Robe Rockets will be a lot of things – a place where young children can be introduced to football, where they learn how to enjoy football with their existing and new friends, and all in an atmosphere for fun and all-round participation. We hope it will become a major part of the week for every young boy and girl interested in playing football in Ballinrobe,” said Declan O’Loughlin, the Head Buck Cat, aka chairperson, of the Robe Rockets committee. “Every child up to the age of ten is invited to take part in the Robe Rockets Academy, which will start a week after the launch. Exact details will be revealed at the launch.” Robe Rockets is one of the recommendations flowing from the club’s Coaching Plan (2015 to 2020) which was recently launched. A committee has been formed to oversee the Rockets and they are particularly keen to encourage parents to become involved. “In recent years, as we have expanded our under-age down to include under 6 footballers, the response from parents has been fantastic in terms of helping out wherever they can, and we know this will continue under the Rockets”, added Declan. All club members are invited along to the registration on January 24th. One of the attractions on the day will be individual or family photos with the Mayo players, and coaches will be on hand on the day to outline the plans for the year and to get to know the players. Families and players can come along at any time between 3.30pm and 4.30pm, and it is anticipated that registration will take approximately 20 minutes. Registration is for players up to the age of 18, boys and girls. Membership prices are HERE

Micheál Keane announced as PRO of Bord na nÓg

Long-serving club player Micheál Keane – who also played at all levels for Mayo – has been named as PRO of the club’s Bord na nÓg committee. Micheál joins Peter Staunton (chairman) and Keith McTigue (secretary) in a new-look committee and we wish them every success. The photo below is not Micheál Keane but we said it’d be a pity to give Micheál the web tutorial without showing him how to put in photos (not that he needs – or, indeed, will get – much tutoring!)

This week’s club news

At a meeting of Ballinrobe GAA Club’s Executive Committee this week, the following management team was ratified for the club’s senior team: Norman O’Brien, Martin Walsh, Tommy O’Malley, Adrian Flannery, Peter Staunton, Keith McTigue, Micheal Keane and Mark Walkin. The team is back training with large numbers reported. Ballinrobe competed in two competitions – Ballad Group and Solo Singing – at the Mayo Scór na nÓg finals, held in Breaffy. The Ballad Group comprised Aoife Culhane, Sibeal Finnerty, Sarah Quinn, Sorcha Hobson, and Sadbh Culhane. Sorcha and Sibeal both competed in the Solo Singing. Unfortunately, despite acquitting themselves well, they were not successful. The club has expressed thanks to Catriona Canny, NT, who prepared the competitors. In a St Stephen’s Day game between the Over 23s and Under 23s, the younger generation prevailed on a score line off 3-9 to 2-8. Referee was Padraig Costello Snr. The club extended sympathy to the following families on their recent bereavements: O’Brien (Cappacurry), Maloney (Kilvendoney), Madden (Ballycastle), Donovan (Clooncan), Murphy (Kilmaine) Conroy (Kiltane) Kelly (Castlebar), Newell (Partry & Castlebar), Caulfield (Liskillen).
