In our final Mayo SFL Division 1A game of the season, we play newly-crowned Connacht club champions Castlebar Mitchels in Flanagan Park, Ballinrobe, on Sunday next, December 1st, at 1pm. We need to win to keep alive our hopes of avoiding relegation. All support appreciated. Referee is Declan Corcoran, Islandeady.

Everyone involved in club football here in Co. Mayo can be proud of Castlebar Mitchels today. Beating Corofin and St Brigid’s on the way to winning the AIB Connacht club title is some achievement. Today’s win was not one for the faint-hearted. We wish them well in the All-Ireland campaign.

From Mayo GAA board: a Chara Mayo Minor Panel members of the successful All Ireland Winning teams in both Football and Hurling will receive their Medals on Saturday night the 30th of November 2013 at a Function at Breaffy House Hotel. A minute’s silence was observed at tonight’s meeting of the club Executive in memory of: Mick Mulvey, a former chairman of our club, who passed away last week; Alan Feeley, Claremorris, who died suddenly last week; Conor Brady, Sligo (son of Maureen Ford, Ballinrobe), who died tragically in Las Vegas; and the McHale family Knockmore/Ballina, on the death of Noel McHale.

We missed the following two wins in a recent county board draw – the club itself won €100, and John Donnelly, Navan, Co. Meath, also won €100. Thanks to John for supporting the draw, and, indeed, to all others who support the draw. Vincent Cummins sold the ticket to John.

Ballinrobe GAA club wishes to join with Mayo GAA (see below) in extending our sympathy to the Feeley family on the sudden death of Alan, who played against Ballinrobe on countless occasions during his all-too-short life. His death has come as a sickening blow to all involved with the GAA here in south Mayo. We wish the Claremorris club the very best as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of such a vibrant young man who had so much life left to live. In our case, we think of Alan’s peers in our own club – those players who lined out against him at primary school level and right up through the ranks to senior level. Bonds are invariably formed with opponents too and we know that many of our members are deeply saddened by his death. The Feeley family have a long connection with Ballinrobe, as his father Willie played rugby for the local RFC for many years, and also covered Ballinrobe in the course of his duties as a member of An Garda Siochana. Officers of Ballinrobe GAA club will officially represent the club at the funeral ceremonies, and we know that dozens of our members will be present too. May he rest in peace. From the Neale GAA: The Neale GAA club will be holding a boxing fundraising night on Saturday 16th November. It will be held in the racecourse in Ballinrobe. Tickets are €10. It belts off at 7.30pm. (Pun intended) We hope to keep swinging on the dance floor afterwards. We will have a full bar on the night. (No belting or swinging allowed in the bar!! There will be a mystery fight also. Many more events on the the night.

Eddie O’Sullivan Shares his Thoughts on Success in Sport – What Does it Take? Special Seminar – November 12th Former Irish international rugby manager Eddie O’Sullivan and Sunday Game analyst Kevin McStay will lead out a strong team of sports men and women at a special seminar to explore what it takes to succeed in sport in today’s world where injuries, heartache losses and set-backs have to be overcome and where the lure of an easier life is never too far away. The Seminar, called Success in Sport – What Does it Take? takes place on Tuesday, November 12th at The Breaffy House Hotel starting at 7:30 pm. It will be chaired by Ballinrobe native and well known GAA commentator Liam Horan. Also included in the panel is local Ladies GAA football star Cora Staunton. Mayo GAA Team Doctor Sean Moffatt is also to attend and will give an insight in to the health and wellbeing of current day high performance sportspeople. The open debate will explore all aspects of sporting life including issues such as: · the relationship between sport and physical, emotional and mental health; the thorny question of the relationship between sport, sponsorship and alcohol in a society where alcohol is an endemic part of all aspects of culture, including the sporting culture; the demands and pressures on high performance athletes – what do they have to say no to in order to get to the top; and the importance of leadership, management and preparation so that teams and individuals can make winning a habit. The seminar is one of the key Mayo events during the Western Region Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week, which is taking place from the 11th to 16th of November. The event is being organized by the Mayo Sports Partnership in association with the Western Region Drugs Task Force (WRDTF) and South West Mayo Development Company. Everybody over 16 involved in sport – budding future stars, those who are competing at club, county or national level now, parents, coaches and managers are invited to attend this free event.
