Some items of club news: SENIOR TEAM MANAGER: At last Monday night’s meeting of the club executive, Alan Flannery (chairman) and Liam Horan (secretary) were appointed to commence the process of appointing a senior team manager for the 2013 season. MAYO NEWS CLUB STARS: Alan Murphy has an award in the bag – and perhaps another one in the offing. MORE HERE. We hope to have a good turnout of club people to support Alan on the night. CHRISTY O’LOUGHLIN: Last Monday night’s club meeting opened with a prayer (led by club president Tony Walkin) for the late Christy O’Loughlin. The club helped out with parking at the O’Loughlin family home on Tuesday evening, and also formed a guard of honour on his final journey from St Mary’s Church to the cemetery. A club tribute is published HERE. May he rest in peace. SCOR NA NOG: The South Mayo Scor na nOg finals will take place in Hollymount on Friday, January 4. anyone under the age of 17 who would like to represent the club should contact any club officer.
Our club member Alan Murphy, whose excellent form in this year’s Mayo SFC resulted in a call-up to the Mayo senior squad during the summer, will receive the Golden Boot award Joint Top Scorer from Play in the Mayo SFC at the Mayo News Club Stars awards on Saturday, December 15, in Knockranny House Hotel, Westport. And Alan is also in strong contention for a place on the Team of the Year on the same night. “The selection panel of Mayo News GAA writers Sean Rice and Austin Garvin, former Knockmore manager, Eamonn Clarke, and Mid West Radio co-commentator John Casey unanimously agreed that Alan’s performances throughout this year’s club championship were deserving of selection on our awards shortlist,” said Mayo News secretary, a former secretary of our club and also a former club player. The club will be represented at the banquet, which is always a wonderful night, and anyone who would like to secure tickets (€60) can do so by contacting Cepta at The Mayo News office on (098) 25311. They are on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and there is a lot of interest at the moment. We are hoping to have as many club people as possible along on the night to support Alan and his family. All proceeds to to Mayo/Roscommon Hospice. The event MC is our club secretary Liam Horan. “A four-course meal will be served, Armagh All-Ireland winner Oisín McConville is our Special Guest, and there will be live music with Riverdeep,” added Mike.

It is with deep regret that Ballinrobe GAA Club records the passing of Christy O’Loughlin, Kilmaine Road, Ballinrobe. Mr O’Loughlin made an enormous contribution to our club, and many other aspects of community life in Ballinrobe. A native of Corrofin, Co. Clare, he moved to Ballinrobe in 1970 to work as farm manager at the agricultural research station at Creagh, Ballinrobe. He became immersed in the activities of Ballinrobe GAA Club, and for many years, it was a rarity for a club game to take place without Christy in attendance, almost invariably accompanied by his wife Anna. They travelled the length and breadth of Ireland to support Ballinrobe GAA Club, Ballinrobe CBS and Ballinrobe Community School teams. Christy served for a period as vice chairman of our club, and was also heavily involved in the physical developments of our club facilities at Flanagan Park. He also played an active part in Ballinrobe hurling club during the 1970s and 1980s. Not surprisingly, they reared a family steeped in the GAA, and the O’Loughlin name was a regular fixture on club teams at all levels throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Family members also contributed at coaching and administrative levels within the club. In recent years, a third generation of O’Loughlin’s have started to wear the club jersey, an enormous source of pride to Christy and Anna. Christy O’Loughlin was an intensely popular person in our club and community. He was a prominent member of the local Agricultural Show and fishing organisations. He was respected for his good humour, sense of optimism, and willingness to contribute in whatever way he could. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Anna; sons James, PJ, Brendan, Declan and Fergal; daughter Evelyn; daughters-in-law; son-in-law; grandchildren and extended family members on their grave loss because, most of all, Christy was a devoted family man. May he rest in peace. Funeral arrangements are available here: http://bit.ly/TpQWT0 – Alan Flannery, Chairman, Ballinrobe GAA Club
