Burrishoole accounted for the Ballinrobe challenge by 5-7 to 2-10 in the second round of Division 1B of the Mayo senior football league at Newport on Sunday.
The wind -assisted home side led by 3-4 to 1-3 at the interval, with county player Jason Doherty (2) and Michael Joyce getting the goals. Ballinrobe provided far stiffer opposition in the third quarter and excellent kicking of points by Kevin Quinn helped to reduce the margin to the minimum, 3-5 to 1-10.
Burrishoole, however, responded resolutely to the challenge and a brace of goals by Alan Ryder in the 47th and 50th minutes put paid to the Ballinrobe threat. Scorers for Ballinrobe: Joseph Burke 1-1, Kevin Quinn and Darren McDonnell 0-4 each, Simon Walsh 1-0, Peter Butler and David Killeen 0-1 each.
